Questions | Where to Get It
I have answers for your questions!
What’s a Kindle Single?
It’s a short story published digitally, available for reading exclusively on Kindles and the Kindle app.
But I don’t have a Kindle! How can I read it?
If you have a phone, tablet, or computer, then you have a Kindle.
Download the Kindle app (it’s FREE), sign into your Amazon account, and you’ll be able to read e-books that you purchase from Amazon.
Kindle for iOS (iPhone & iPad)
Kindle for your Windows computer
Or, if you don’t want to download anything, just go to www.read.amazon.com in a web browser.
Why should I read your stupid story?
Because it’s good! And funny! And it has all the answers.
What is the story like?
I’d characterize it as Kurt Vonnegut meets Rainbow Rowell meets the television show Black Mirror. Just read it!
So it's a short story... how short we talkin'?
If it were a printed book it’d be about 35 pages.
Can I read this story at work and still look like I’m working?
Indeed you can! Simply open an internet browser and navigate to read.amazon.com—that’s how you can read your Kindle books without having to download the Kindle app to your computer.
PRO TIP: Occasionally type the words as you read them, and make a lot of noise so your colleagues think you’re a serious go-getter.
Wait, it's really called "Thirsty"?
That’s right. I’m aware of its Urban Dictionary connotations.
I own a Nook, and I refuse to download the Kindle app. I just won’t do it! BN till I die!! ...Can I read your story on my Nook?
I mean… I guess if you’re that committed to the Nook, then get in touch with me and I’ll send you a version you can read (after you Venmo me a dollar).
Is there an audio version of this Kindle Single?
Yep! The audio version, read by me, will be available to purchase for $2.99 from Audible and iTunes.
That's the most beautiful cover art I've ever seen. Who designed it?
Laci Roth designed it. She’s my business partner (and we’re married). You should contact her and hire her to design your stuff too!
Can I read a sample?

Even before the apocalypse, Jo had found online dating to be stressful, frustrating, and a poor return on time invested. The apocalypse had made things arguably even worse.
Somewhat surprisingly, it wasn’t that there were now so many fewer people. All of life’s components had been transformed by the widespread absence of people, but Jo didn’t think this was such a problem for her romantic prospects. Before the apocalypse, all the dating services she’d tried used algorithms that placed her in a narrow slice with a few other well-matched people looking online for love. Now that she was past the apocalypse, something very similar had happened because there were only a few people, full stop. So, no algorithm needed, which was fine with Jo because she hadn’t seen enormous success with the old methods.
With the world’s population so tiny, and with so few resources available to those who remained, the desire to date had become a very niche pursuit, like crocheting or collecting antique clocks. The internet had just come back, but it operated with the same unreliability as the phone lines. They were, in fact, the same thing, as the only functional infrastructure that could deliver consumer internet service was the old system of dial-up lines and, as was the case with the power, these were subject to unpredictable rolling blackouts.
